Environmentalism used to be one of the small building blocks of the nationalist socialist ideology in Germany but it kept on growing and was adopted mainly by the far left-wing, atheist youth.
However, in recent decades, another perspective on environmentalism – and especially its most radical incarnation, the global warming alarmism – was becoming increasingly self-evident. Global warming alarmism is a religion. This point was described in many TRF blog posts a decade ago, too.
Many people have made the point before 2000 but one of the first articulate texts about this topic was the 2003 speech by late TRF reader Michael Crichton, "Environmentalism As Religion".
Like other religions, environmentalism is based on the myth of the initial paradise (you wouldn't want to live in the wild and cruel pre-industrial world!) and the original sin. There will be a judgement day and people must look for salvation which separates them to good believers and evil infidels. The facts no longer matter. It is all about the belief so the huge and accumulating evidence disproving the environmentalist religious myths has no impact on the believers.
The current left-wing Pope has completed his "encyclical on the environment". An encyclical is defined as a "holy daddy's guide for subordinate Catholic apparatchiks describing how they may and should maximize their sycophancy". These mid-level priests are expected to influence masses of generic Catholics, too. The original draft was written in Latin but in is already being translated to other major cultural languages of the world – Aramaic, Phoenician, Hebrew – and the languages of the key global economies – such as Greek.
It's widely expected that the coming "encyclical on the environment" will be a cover version of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth". How will such a rant by the general secretary of the Catholic Church impact the 1.25 billion Catholics across the world? We will see.
On one hand, the Catholic Church is one of the groups where an "authority" is an important guide for the members' behavior and Mr Francis is supposed to be such an authority because a bunch of other senile granddads decided that it should be so. One sixth of the world population may become increasingly more alarmist and brainwashed as a result.
On the other hand, the symbiosis of the climate religion and Catholicism seems far from harmonious. There are still lots of global warming believers who are equally staunch anti-religious warriors. And there are at least hundreds of millions Catholics who find Gore-style left-wing tricks in big politics at least as unacceptable as atheism.
Some Catholics have already abandoned the church because of the emerging alliance between the Pope and the climate change fraudsters – because of Pope's support for the false prophets. This grassroots dynamics may become much more urgent and important than the transformation of the Catholics' views initiated "from above".
Even without these difficult tests, the Christian churches are already weakening rapidly. A newly published Pew Research Center survey has concluded that the percentage of self-described Christians in the U.S. – a major Christian land – dropped from 78 to 71 percent just between 2007 and 2014. A percentage point disappears every year. We may be 20 years away from Christians' losing the majority status in the U.S. and 50 years from their becoming a marginal group. Mr Francis may accelerate this dynamics. Does he care? Doesn't he actually want it?
I have never believed the teaching of any major church – it has always looked like a silly attitude to me and those who were supposed to be the carriers of the "wisdom" have looked at least relatively stupid in my eyes since I was a kid. But many people believe in this methodology of information gathering and some "mysterious mist" helps them to believe in things like the papal infallibility and similar memes.
What will happen with their belief – with the indescribable spiritual X-factor inside their souls that encourages them to see an information superhighway between them, Mr Francis, Jesus Christ, and the Creator of the Universe – when Mr Francis publishes a rant that will make it clear that he's just another ordinary fallible human whose behavior is driven by fads and opportunism? An Al Gore in skirts? Well, I don't know. I don't see into their brains.
At any rate, Mr Francis has already become a darling of the hardcore climate alarmist loons. And because Jeb Bush, a GOP frontrunner in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, has said that he wants to be an obedient Catholic (Jeb Bush, a lifelong Christian, was converted to Catholicism in 1995) and he doesn't even respect the separation of the church and state, Jeb Bush has become a darling of the activists, too.
A decade ago, I didn't have a clue that Jeb Bush, a brother of the U.S. president hated by the leftists, would become a flagship symbolizing the penetration of the left-wing delusions into the American life, something I would have to oppose so unambiguously.
It is not hard to see that if the Catholic Church had not abandoned their basic belief system, the current leadership of the Catholic Church – plus the likes of Jeb Bush – would be considered a bunch of heretics and witches who should have been burned at stake for many years. Yesterday, Francis said in the Vatican, a Disneyland-like facility in Rome, that God will judge you on whether you cared for Earth. Oh, really?
Let me remind you what He actually said in His well-known book on judgments, the Bible.
The Bible is a big book so it's not entirely consistent. You may find some warnings to our pre-industrial ancestors, too:

I don't expect any "uniform" attitude of the Catholics but it seems plausible to me that 1/3 or 1/2 of the Catholics would find Mr Francis' unholy alliance with the global warming radical activists to be unacceptable.
I've written a rather long text above. But at the end, I don't really think that in 2015, the Pope belongs among the 10 most powerful people in the world. The Pope's role could have been different 500 years ago but we're living in the 21st century which is different and the Pope is an empty-suit celebrity not too different from Leonardo DiCaprio and hundreds of similar people. What he will say, write, and think will probably make no significant difference.
Update: Marc Morano just sent us an e-mail that the publication of the encyclical has been postponed. Francis needs to study Climate Depot and The Reference Frame. Morano and a few pals visited the Vatican and were spiritually influencing the Pope.

If you wanted to complain that these quotes are about animals and not the climate change, I can also tell you whether, according to God, the usual changing of the seasons and the weather would ever be disrupted:
Genesis 8:22: While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”In other words, God said that the seasons and the changing weather have existed since the formation of the Earth 4.5 billion years ago and they will exist through the absorption of the Earth by the Red Giant Sun in 7.5 billion years from now. No weather-related catastrophe may come before that. God wasn't quite as clear and informative as your humble correspondent but He was only a God.
