What is routing?

Routing is the process of selecting the path (from the physical connections available) for the traffic to travel on it. Routing is a key feature of the Internet because it enables messages to pass from one device (router, switch, hub, and computer) to another and eventually reach the target machine. Each intermediary device performs routing by passing along the message to the next device.
