Aren’t wind developers giant companies simply making profits for their shareholders?
Carefully developed wind power schemes can have many benefits, not just to the developer and owners, but to local communities, national energy security and global environmental protection. Friends of the Earth has been campaigning in support of a wider variety of wind projects, including small-scale and community-owned projects where local people receive a financial return from the sale of electricity, such as the Baywind cooperative in Cumbria. Friends of the Earth would rather companies invested in renewable energy than in the fossil fuel and nuclear industries. It is only through such investment that a healthy and successful renewable energy industry will flourish in the UK.
